Velocity Prep was created by Skillpoint’s industry and education council members as a direct response to the need for high school students to gain relevant work experience and exposure to career pathways. During the program students work together as a mock company on a real project for a client company. Students research a problem, develop a solution and deliver a final presentation and professional report to the client and school officials.

Velocity Prep students:

  • Meet with business and community leaders
  • Connect course content to careers
  • Communicate and work effectively in teams
  • Research real world topics
  • Complete a Final Report
  • Present their work to the public
  • Tour companies and relevant sites

Summer 2009 - Velocity Prep

Support Velocity Prep

Please Participate as a Velocity Prep Client Company
Velocity Prep Clients are businesses or organizations who commit a few hours to work with students on a project related to their organization. There is no financial commitment to participate; companies do not pay Velocity Prep interns.

Client Projects: Projects will be developed in collaboration with Skillpoint and school administrators. Typically the project focuses on a question asked by the client company, “Should we do X?” or “How can we best accomplish Y?”

Students divide the project work into team assignments. Project teams identify alternative solutions, research and create criteria, use various decision making processes and provide a report outlining the resulting solution.

Volunteer Needs and Time Commitment:
• A main contact who meets with the program development team to help shape the project and deliverables (two to five hours prior to program)
• Three to four individuals to serve as contact for student teams (one to three hours during program)
• Attend final presentation as an honored guest

Hundreds of 9- to 14-year-olds participated in the Central Texas FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program thanks to the amazing support of parents, schools, mentors from local high tech companies, colleges and universities, and tons of volutneers.  Students engaged in hands-on probelm solving with LEGO Robotics while researching real-world issues and creating their own solutions. "This event was amazing," an FLL student participant said.  "My team had such a wonderful time. The energy and enthusiasm were unbelievable."
