Special Gateway Electrical Graduation at City Hall
Through the generosity of Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez, we will be hosting our June Gateway Electrical graduation in the council chambers of City Hall on Friday, June 17, 2011, from 10am-12pm. The Mayor Pro Tem extended the invitation as a show of support for our popular workforce development program’s continued success. Longtime supporter of Gateway programs and specialist in Offender Employment Training, Matthew Veloz will be a guest speaker and local non-profit Ventana Del Soul will cater the event.
Gateway programs allow former offenders, dropouts, and other disadvantaged persons to transition back into the workforce by providing them with technical skills and career training in Construction, Electrical, and Allied Health trades. One of many Gateway graduations held throughout the year by Skillpoint Alliance, this particular graduation will celebrate the accomplishments of the Spring/Summer session of Gateway Electrical, a two-part course that provides 3 weeks of basic construction training and then 4 weeks of comprehensive training towards an Electrical Level 1 certification.
This ceremony will bring the total number of Gateway Electrical graduates, since its inception in 2010, to ninety, and the total for all Gateway program graduates to 1,408. Graduation rates for Gateway Electrical are at 88% and the overall employment rate for Gateway programs is 78%. Gateway programs started in 1994 with Gateway Construction as a partnership between the City of Austin and Skillpoint Alliance to teach workers construction skills. Graduates of the Gateway programs leave equipped with marketable skills that benefit both themselves and employers seeking a skilled workforce.
The graduation ceremony on June 17 is open to all. For more information about Gateway programs, please visit the Gateway Homepage.
