HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PRESENT EDUCATIONAL GAMES TO CLIENT, ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES (AMD)
Austin, TX, 6/30/11 – Pflugerville high school students presented their video game demos to industry professionals, educators, and community leaders at AMD’s Lonestar Campus on Thursday. The games were developed as part of Austin based non-profit Skillpoint Alliance’s Game On! Velocity Prep program, a project-based, learning-intensive summer program during which students form a company and develop a game-based solution for a real client. This year, students were tasked with designing web-based games to inform the public about AMD’s LEED certified green building practices.
Game On! Velocity Prep 2011 ran from June 6th – June 30th and was coordinated by the Digital Media Council (DMC) at Skillpoint Alliance and supported by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, Pflugerville Independent School District, AMD, and the Birch Tree Group. The program consisted of students from Connally High School and Pflugerville High School. The program’s purpose is to inspire students to pursue postsecondary education and train for a career in the burgeoning video game industry. Students get hands-on design experience and learn about the industry from practicing professionals. During the program students created a company identity and website (http://gamesnakeitm.weebly.com), worked in creative teams, and took field trips to Tech Ranch and Game Salad.
Game On! Velocity Prep is one of many initiatives led by the DMC, which facilitates strategic partnerships between industry, education, and community leaders to strengthen the digital media workforce in Central Texas.
