DMC Quarterly Meeting

Friday, September 17, 2010

AMS Pictures Public Interest was thrilled to welcome the Digital Media Council (DMC) to their studio for a meeting of the minds last month. All eyes were on the future as Austin’s media thought leaders and influencers gathered to discuss exciting developments on the horizon. From classrooms to TV sets to game consoles, the latest news was officially inspiring.

In attendance were representatives from Girl Start, SkillsNET, Texas Business and Education Coalition, The Guildhall at SMU, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, St. Edward’s University, Omega Broadcasting, the City of Austin, Mobile Film School, Texas State Technical College, AMD, University of Texas, Interactive Age, Texas Advanced Computing Center, AMODA, Texas State University, and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce.

The group heard a series of microtalks from the following speakers:  Paul Alvarado-Dykstra of the Texas Motion Picture Alliance, Elizabeth Quintanilla of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, David Conover or Connally High School in Pflugerville ISD, Jennifer Bullard of the International Game Developers Association Austin chapter, and Jonathan Daniels of UT Austin’s Radio, Television, and Film Department.  Attendees were also treated to a studio tour by Natalie Glover of AMS Pictures.

If someone needed proof that Austin is poised to be a driving force in shaping the next generation of media artists, they needed to look no further than the AMS Pictures studio. DMC members provided insightful updates on successful integration of digital media into classroom curriculum, government incentives that will secure a future for the Austin video game design industry, and the benefits that are already being seen (on a TV near you!) from the recently-passed state film incentive program.

All the DMC council members are working—individually and most certainly as a group—to ensure that Austin becomes the epicenter of creative media innovation. Among the topics discussed were plans to hold a strategic planning retreat for DMC leadership, with the goal of clarifying subcommittee needs and drafting a fundraising plan.

Ronald Smith evacuated from Hurricane Katrina and arrived in Austin with only $40.  He came to Skillpoint Alliance where we helped him obtain skills in construction through our adult workforce program, Construction Gateway. He then found employment with Zachry Construction in Austin. “Hope was a main element and this program, Construction Gateway, enhanced it and gave me the opportunity to expand my skills,” Smith said. “The people of Austin have been very generous to me. Thanks, Skillpoint Alliance!"
