Gateway Electrical
Gateway Electrical was launched in January 2010 in response to a rising demand for more rapid employment training programs within the construction industry. A component of Gateway Construction Tech, Gateway Electrical provides training for students interested in beginning or enhancing a career as an Apprentice Electrician, Electrician's Helper or entry level Electrical work.
Gateway Electrical students enroll in an 8 week program that includes the 4-week Construction Core program (link back to the Construction page) and a comprehensive 4-week Electrical training program. Interested students who have completed the Construction Core program, already have their NCCER Introductory Craft Skill certification or who meet the experience requirements to be exempt from completing the Core program can apply for only the 4-week Electrical curriculum.
Gateway Electrical students benefit from the partnerships Gateway has with the three area apprentice programs: Independent Electrical Contractors, Associated Builders & Contractors and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (local Union) who often speak in class or provide opportunities for field trip to tour their offices and job sites.
The Gateway Electrical students also complete intensive hands-on work in the Playhouses (link to the page or flyer) built in the Construction Core program. The students wire the building for lighting, outlets, ceiling fans and air conditioning window units.
In addition to the Certifications and experience received by completing the CORE program, graduates of Gateway Electrical complete the required coursework for Electrical Level 1 through NCCER.
Level 1 Electrical training includes:
- Orientation to Electrical Trade
- Electrical Circuits
- Electrical Theory
- Intro to Electrical Codes
- Device Boxes
- Hand Bending
- Raceways & Fittings
- Conductors & Cables
- Intro to Electrical Blueprints
- Residential Electrical Service
- Electrical Test Equip
Students also receive a Marketable Skills Award from Austin Community College and Certificates of Completion from the local chapters of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), Associated General Contractors (AGC) and National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
In addition, students spend time developing resumes, creating email accounts and registering for work with on-line job search internet sites.
