The STEM Council at Skillpoint Alliance hosted its Third Quarterly meeting of 2011 on Friday, September 9 at Spansion, which drew 35 business, community, and education executives for a high-energy briefing.  The morning included pecha-kucha** presentations by a variety of Central Texas companies and non-profits, providing a fast-paced insight into the unique work the Council and its members do. **Never heard of pecha-kucha?  “Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat," it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea:  20 images x 20 seconds.  It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.”

Ronald Smith evacuated from Hurricane Katrina and arrived in Austin with only $40.  He came to Skillpoint Alliance where we helped him obtain skills in construction through our adult workforce program, Construction Gateway. He then found employment with Zachry Construction in Austin. “Hope was a main element and this program, Construction Gateway, enhanced it and gave me the opportunity to expand my skills,” Smith said. “The people of Austin have been very generous to me. Thanks, Skillpoint Alliance!"
