The Central Texas economy depends on office workers and plumbers as well as engineers and nurses. Unfortunately, gaps persist between the workforce needs of our region and the education and training available to and pursued by Central Texans.  Participants of the CentralTX@Work initiative began discussion on these targeted goals:

  • Target displaced workers for rapid training programs in high-need careers
  • Focus dropout prevention and recovery programs on graduation requirements and training/credentials in high-demand entry-level jobs
  • Educate teachers and counselors about regional workforce needs
  • Inform students about the education required to enter high-demand industries
  • Provide instructional strategies for teachers that link the work of Central Texas industries to school work
  • Increase flexibility in state high school math and science requirements to recognize that all students will not pursue a baccalaureate degree
  • Increase funding for high school career and technology education programs, including up-to-date equipment

Before I started Construction Gateway, I had low self-esteem, no self confidence and very little hope for a bright future. I’ve made some bad choices in my life but I learned a lesson with every mistake and it’s helped me change the way I think.

Construction Gateway has given me the chance to re-invent myself. The program and all the instructors have given me back my self-esteem, self-confidence and something that’s far more important than anything that can be taught in these classrooms... hope. I am no longer afraid to wake up and face the day’s challenges.

Johnny Beall,
2009 Gateway Graduate
