About Construction Gateway
Construction Gateway is a five week adult training program in the construction trades available at no cost to Travis Country residents who are unemployed, under-employed, homeless or transitioning from incarceration and seeking employment opportunities.
Students are trained at Austin Community College Riverside Campus. Students earn nine hours of college credit and a Marketable Skills Award through "hands on" training in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and concrete/masonry trades. Upon completion, students receive Associated Builders and Contractors industry apprenticeship credit, NSC certificates for CPR/AED and First Aid training, OSHA certification in Construction Safety, certificates of completion from the Associated Builders and Contractors and Associated General Contractors, and job placement assistance.

Program History
Construction Gateway began in 1994 in response to the construction industry's demand for trained entry-level workers. Employers hiring Gateway graduates receive an employee equipped with basic construction training and familiarity with the soft skills required on the job. employers in a variety of fields participate in Gateway job fairs and hire Gateway graduates for entry-level positions. Professional construction contractors serve as ACC adjuct faculty to train and teach their specialty to Gateway classes.
In 2004, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Jobs for the Future recognized Construction Gateway as one of the four best Career Advancement Strategies in the United States.
