GAME ON!

The Game On! Velocity Prep program was a four-week video game development internship that ran from June 8 - July 2, 2009. Twenty students from across the Austin school district went to work each day from 8 am to 4 pm, learning what life was like in the "real world" and presented their final projects to a group of education and industry professionals at Travis High School on July 1.

The students were challenged to take contemporary social and economic issues and create an entertaining game that both raised awareness of the issue and highlighted possible solutions for dealing with the problem. Pollution, global warming, energy conservation, credit relief, and other issues were researched and then framed as the antagonists in online video games created completely by the students. When the students got stuck, they had the ability to turn to gaming experts like Michael Agustin and Nestor Hernandez from Gendai Games and Karin Dicks and engineers from AMD to give the games a test run and offer solutions to problems.

Special thanks to our sponsor Austin ISD and our industry partner AMD. Follow these links to see what our Game On! interns did.

www.amd.com/changingthegame - AMD's Changing the Game website. A fantastic prorgram that is bringing game development to the next generation with a higher calling to social responsibility.

Ronald Smith evacuated from Hurricane Katrina and arrived in Austin with only $40.  He came to Skillpoint Alliance where we helped him obtain skills in construction through our adult workforce program, Construction Gateway. He then found employment with Zachry Construction in Austin. “Hope was a main element and this program, Construction Gateway, enhanced it and gave me the opportunity to expand my skills,” Smith said. “The people of Austin have been very generous to me. Thanks, Skillpoint Alliance!"
