Educator Institutes (2010 Registration Open!)

Educator Institutes provide educators an opportunity to learn new and exciting ways to incorporate industry and community into the process of instruction.  Site tours, hands-on activities and engaging discussion and lectures from industry experts and professionals connect educators to local resources in an innovative professional development experience.  Teachers relate institute information to academic areas such as:

  • Algebra, Geometry and Calculus
  • Biology, Physics and ICP
  • Media Tech, Computer Science and Tech Apps
  • Middle School Math, Science and Robotics courses and programs

2009 Summer Educator Institutes

Video Game Design - Hands-on training using 2D and 3D game development tools and planning for integration of  industry-led workshops and field learning experiences for their students during the school year.

Forensics - Interaction with scientists and criminal justice professionals, development of classroom activities and lessons and information about career paths.

Nanotechnology - Explore fascinating applications of nanotechnology in fields of medicine, clean energy, national defense, and electronics through industry tours, faculty lectures and hands-on demonstrations.

NXT Robotics: FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge Prep - Learn the basics of robot design and programming, tours and lectures provide a FLL season overview.

Digital Production: POST - Use sound and visual editing tools in media creation with techniques to create sound and visual special effects.

Additional Information

More than 90 educators from 15+ districts attended Skillpoint Alliance's Summer Educator Institutes in 2008. Thanks to educator participation, industry involvement and community engagement, Skillpoint provided nearly 2,100 hours of continuing professional education.

Participants who attend a Summer Educator Institute are encouraged to submit a TEKS-aligned lesson plan based on Institute content. After submission and approval, educators are eligible to receive a stipend. Lesson plans will be posted on Skillpoint Alliance’s website to serve as a resource for the educational community.

Hundreds of 9- to 14-year-olds participated in the Central Texas FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program thanks to the amazing support of parents, schools, mentors from local high tech companies, colleges and universities, and tons of volutneers.  Students engaged in hands-on probelm solving with LEGO Robotics while researching real-world issues and creating their own solutions. "This event was amazing," an FLL student participant said.  "My team had such a wonderful time. The energy and enthusiasm were unbelievable."
