Summary of College & Career Expo 2008

Skillpoint Alliance held its 12th annual College & Career Expo March 6, 2008 at the Palmer Events Center.

Nearly 3,000 students from 10 Central Texas School districts checked out a wide range of potential career paths. Students interacted with 104 exhibitors from business and industries, colleges and universities as well as watching robots, multi-media displays and culinary demonstrations. A special feature was the Financial Aid Plaza, where 209 students reported having the opportunity to work on a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Exhibitors rated the fair 4.16 on a 1 to 5 scale; school staff member rated it 4.40; and students, 4.35.

Ronald Smith evacuated from Hurricane Katrina and arrived in Austin with only $40. He came to Skillpoint Alliance where we helped him obtain skills in construction through our adult workforce program, Construction Gateway. He then found employment with Zachry Construction in Austin. “Hope was a main element and this program, Construction Gateway, enhanced it and gave me the opportunity to expand my skills,” Smith said. “The people of Austin have been very generous to me.
